On 16 March 2020, the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau decided to tighten the borders of Canada due to the Covid-19 outbreak. However, despite this, there are still certain individuals who are still allowed to enter the country. Below will explain if you are one of those allowed to enter.

Visitors

Canadian Visitors

You are unable to travel to Canada on a valid visitor’s visas or electronic travel authorization (eTA). However, if you are able to prove one of the below you will be permitted to enter Canada.

  • You are an immediate family member of a Canadian citizen. 
  • You are an immediate family member of a Canadian permanent resident.
    • You will, however, need to prove that you are coming entering for essential reasons only.
  • You are an immediate family member a non-Canadian citizen and permanent resident you will require written authorization from the Government of Canada to reunite with your family member living in Canada.

International Students

If you are an international student whose study permit was issued on or before 18 March 2020 you will be allowed to enter Canada. The Government of Canada will assess your health before being allowed to leave the port, however, should you show signs of the COVID-19 virus you will not be permitted to enter the country.

Temporary foreign workers

If you are a temporary foreign worker you will be permitted to enter Canada provided you are coming to perform an essential service. Nonessential businesses in Canada are closed or operating with limited staff. Contact your employer to ensure that you are an essential worker before traveling to Canada.

Permanent Residents

If your Canadian permanent residence application was approved on or before 18 March 2020 you will be permitted to enter the country and exempted from the travel restriction measure put in place.

Despite being exempted from the travel restrictions, when entering Canada you will be required to self isolate for 14 days when you arrive in Canada even if you do not show any symptoms.
